Stage 1 (Base)

Stage 1 (Base) is the quiet period when a stock's price moves sideways or slightly up after a significant decline, building a foundation for a potential future rally. You'll see this pattern in technical analysis—the study of price charts to predict future movement—because traders use it to spot stocks that might be ready to jump. The base acts like a launching pad: the longer and more stable it is, the more potential energy builds up. For example, if TechCorp stock fell 40% over six months, then spent three months bouncing between $25 and $28 without breaking either level, that's a base forming. Smart investors watch for bases because they often precede strong upward moves, though nothing is guaranteed.
